Manas Kumar Mandal

Manas is a Chemical Engineer with over 40 Years of Experience in the Energy sector (Oil & Gas). He is considered a subject matter expert in thermal design for heat exchangers. In the past, he has also worked as a Refinery operation supervisor at one Indian Oil Refinery.


Manas was a member of the PMC review team for a refinery during Detailed engineering work in Spain. Manas was an Energy audit specialist in the oil and gas industry having a member of the Energy audit team for Indian refineries and Offshore oil platform. He has also worked as an Assistant Project Coordinator and a Process Discipline Auditor. He also has expertise as a mechanical lead. He has worked as a principal thermal designer in various FEED packages and Detailed Engineering Revamp jobs.  Manas is highly experienced in revamping modifications that evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of various projects.

Armed with experience in various units: Naphtha Cracker, EO/EG, LLDPE, MEG, UDEX, PX, PTA, LNG degasification, Crude/Vacuum, FCC, Hydrocracker, Hydrogen, Renewables, etc. He has worked on projects with clients such as Exxon Mobil, Shell, Repsol, Chevron, IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC, and many more.

Professional Experience

Fluor Daniel India 

1st Term (May 2006 – May 2020)

Worked as an SME Thermal design of heat exchangers in FEED/ EPCM/Detailed Design/Revamp modification, Proposal input, TBE preparation, Vendor design review in their office, as a Mechanical lead in a refinery FEED project and a Waste to Energy Project.

Significant Achievements

  • Cost saving of more than 5 million USD(@ctc) in design modification of equipment and process unit optimization, in selection of heat transfer equipment type,
  • Prepared training manual for graduate engineer trainees for thermal design
  • Trained engineers/trainees in the thermal design of heat exchangers.
  • Received awards in many projects for providing value-added schemes/ideas

Assisted other Fluor offices in the thermal design of equipment and process unit optimization, in the selection of heat transfer equipment type in revamp projects.

2nd Term (Nov 2023 – Mar 2025)

Worked as Director-I in his last stint, mechanical department after rejoining in year 2023. Worked for thermal design of heat exchangers in various FEED/Revamp modification. Left in March 2025 to work elsewhere.

Worked as the Lead Thermal Design Engineer in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

Worked on preparing competitive bids for shell-and-tube heat exchangers.

2021-2023

Worked as a design reviewer of thermal design of heat exchanger process data sheets (termed as licensor specifications) in FEED of Renewable technology before issuing to Clients, Vendor design review of air-cooled heat exchangers and providing training to Process engineers.

Commissioning of 3 MTPA crude refinery, successful operation and supervision for 5 years, troubleshooting.
